Realme 1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Y2: which phone offers the bang for your buck?
“Realme 1 packs an Helio P60 processor, which is closer to Snapdragon 636 in terms of the performance than the SD625 found on the Redmi Y2”
Xiaomi today launched its Redmi Y2 smartphone in India and the new handset brings along some impressive features at a budget-friendly price. However, unlike previous offerings from Xiaomi, which used the rule the roost in their respective segment, the Y2 finds itself in an extremely competitive market. One of the direct competitors for the handset is Realme 1, which also offers great specifications at a similar price point. So we thought it’d be interesting to compare them against each other to see which one comes on the top. To find out how the Redmi Y2 stacks up against the Realme 1, read our detailed comparison.
Design and display
If we talk about the aesthetics on the two smartphones, the Realme 1 comes out on top by some distance. The diamond-cut pattern with reflective glass-like back provides the handset a premium look that will turn everyone’s head. On the other hand, the Redmi Y2 comes with a unibody design that might not catch fingerprints like the Realme 1 but feels dated and slightly monotonous. Both handsets offer thin bezels at the front but Xiaomi’s phone features a fingerprint sensor at the back, while the Realme 1 relies on the face unlock feature for security.
Coming to the display, the Realme 1 packs a 6-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, which is notably better when compared to the newly-launched Redmi Y2, which offers a 5.99-inch HD+ (1,440 x 720 pixels) panel with an 18:9 aspect ratio.
As you might have observed from the points mentioned above, the Realme 1 comes out as a clear winner in this category, with a better design and sharper display than on the newest offering from Xiaomi.
Performance and software
Moving on to the performance, the Redmi Y2 is powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC, which has been previously implemented on several mid-range handsets and has been a popular choice for phonemakers. The chip is coupled with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB as built-in storage options. The storage is further expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card. Once again, the Realme 1 manages to push the Redmi Y2 over as the former packs an Helio P60 processor, which is closer to Snapdragon 636 in terms of the performance than the SD625. The processor is coupled with either 3GB, 4GB, or 6GB of RAM. The storage variants on the Realme 1 include 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB options, also expandable via a dedicated microSD card slot.
Considering that we are talking about two smartphones from a similar price range, the Realme 1 comes with a much more capable processor than that on the Redmi Y2. Furthermore, the P60 also comes with AI capabilities thanks to a dedicated APU (AI processing unit).
Taking the software into the account, the Realme 1 boots ColorOS 5, which is based on Android 8.1 Oreo. On the other hand, the Redmi Y2 runs Android Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box. Both OS comes with a number of features, with Xiaomi’s interface offering some interesting features, although the choice of UI largely boils down to the user preference.
Camera and battery
The Realme 1 comes with a single 13-megapixel rear-facing primary camera, accompanied by a LED flash, and an 8-megapixel selfie shooter. In contrast, the Redmi Y2 features a rear-facing dual camera setup with 12MP + 5MP sensors in a vertical orientation, accompanied by LED flash in between the two sensors. At the front, the Xiaomi handset sports a 16MP sensor for clicking selfies and video-calling. Both camera setups make use of artificial intelligence to help users take better pictures. In this particular department, the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 clearly comes out as a winner.
However, as we move on to the battery capacity, the Realme 1 again takes the lead as the smartphone features a 3,410mAh battery, compared with a 3,000 mAh cell on the Redmi Y2.
Conclusion
As you might have guessed it by now, the Realme 1 manages to top the Redmi Y2 in some crucial departments including display, design, processing power, and battery capacity. However, the Redmi Y2 features a fingerprint sensor and takes an edge in terms of optics, but otherwise, the Realme 1 seems to offer a better overall value, especially for its asking price. The pricing for Redmi Y2 starts at Rs 9,999, while the base variant for the Realme 1 (3GB RAM / 32GB storage) retails for Rs 8,999.
