Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 vs Mi Pad 3: what’s different

“The Mi Pad 4 brings substantial changes over its predecessor, including AI-enabled face unlock capabilities”

After a series of leaks and some teasers, Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has finally unveiled its much-anticipated Mi Pad 4. The successor to the Mi Pad 3 is more compact and boasts an AI-powered face unlock mechanism. But what else does the slate offers over its previous iteration? Well, that’s what we’re here to find out in this detailed comparison.

Design and display

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 is slightly larger and taller in comparison to most other tablets. It comes with an 8-inch display with a resolution of 1,920×1,200 pixels resolution and an aspect ratio of 16:10. On the other hand, the Mi Pad 3 flaunts a 7.9-inch retina display with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, resulting in a pixel density of 326ppi. The latest tablet is also more compact than the Mi Pad 3, and measures 200.2 x 120.3 x 7.9mm, which ensures ease of operation with a single hand too. Both the devices support features like temperature adjustment, eye protection mode as well as an intelligent adaptation mode.

Hardware and software

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 runs on the powerful 2.2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 660 SoC which comes with Adreno 512 GPU, which promises smooth functioning. In contrast, the Mi Pad 3 is powered by not-so-powerful hexa-core MediaTek MT18176 processor clocked at 2.1GHz. As far as storage goes, the Mi Pad 4 comes in two variants – 32GB with 3GB RAM and 64GB with 4GB RAM, while its predecessor offers 64GB internal memory and 4GB RAM. The higher variant of the newest tablet from Xiaomi also has LTE connectivity, while the Mi Pad 3 does not support this feature.

The Mi Pad 4 runs Android Oreo-based MIUI 9 out of the box. The UI feature includes an improved notification pane, a split-screen mode, app shortcuts and more. This software even promises up to two times faster app load times and better background memory management. On the other hand, the Mi Pad 3 was launched with MIUI 8 which is running atop Android Nougat.

Camera and battery

In the optics department, the tablets aren’t much different. Both the slates come with a 13-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera.

On the battery front, Xiaomi’s latest comes with a 6,000mAh power unit, as compared to 6,600mAh on the Mi Pad 3. However, the slight downgrade in battery life shouldn’t affect the Mi Pad 4’s runtime, thanks to power-efficient Snapdragon 660 SoC.
