OnePlus beats Samsung to lead India’s premium smartphone segment for the first time

Just a week ago, Counterpoint Research released its latest report for the state of India’s smartphone market. In the report, the research firms said that OnePlus was the fastest growing smartphone brand during the Q2 2018. Now, the market watchdog has released a detailed report regarding India’s premium smartphone segment. The firm claims that OnePlus has surpassed Samsung and Apple to lead India’s premium smartphone market in the second quarter of this year.
As per the report, OnePlus has become the top smartphone manufacturer in the premium segment in India for the first ever time. The brand’s latest flagship, the OnePlus 6’s strong sales lead to the brand’s success in the country in the >Rs 30,000 price segment. The company claimed a total market share of 40 percent during the period. The OnePlus 6 accounted for the 30 percent sales, while the OnePlus 5T took a market share of 10 percent.
The report mentions that the premium smartphone market grew 19 percent year-on-year during Q2 2018.Samsung, OnePlus, and Apple contributed to 88 percent of the overall premium market, down 95 percent a quarter ago. This is due to the entry of new manufacturers like Huawei, Vivo, Nokia, and LG in this segment.
The firm suggests that Samsung captured 34 percent of the premium smartphone market in Q2 2018. The South Korean tech giant’s shipments reduced 25 percent year-on-year due to decline in shipments of the Galaxy S9, as compared to its predecessor last year. As for Apple, the Cupertino-based company’s share was 14 percent, which is the lowest till date.
The study mentioned that OnePlus is now increasing its footprint in India by launching offline and exclusive stores across the country. It will allow the company to reach out to a bigger user base in the future.
