Samsung’s Galaxy Note series to reportedly be merged with the Galaxy S range

Every calendar year, Samsung releases two flagships. The first one being the smartphone(s) in its Galaxy S series at the start of the year and second, in the Galaxy Note range. Now, if reports are to be believed, the South Korean major may bring devices under these series under one umbrella. According to the Korean publication, The Bell, Samsung’s Vice Chairman, Jay Lee, is looking to merge the mainstream Galaxy S flagship lineup and the S Pen-toting Galaxy Note family for a variety of reasons. 

The merger sounds practical as the buyers are often confused as to which Samsung flagship model to go for. Since the specs of the smartphones in the Note series — barring the stylus — are almost identical to the Galaxy S offerings. Additionally, the big display, which earlier was a USP of the Galaxy Note range, has made its way to Plus variant of the S phones. The Samsung Galaxy S8+ (Review) for instance, features 6.2-inch display whereas the Galaxy Note 8 (review) has a marginally bigger 6.3-inch display. 

We can expect to see the same thing this year as well, with the Galaxy Note 9, which is set to launch on August 9th. The next-gen Note series smartphone is anticipated to sport the same set of specifications as its S series sibling. Perhaps Samsung also realises this as the same publication (in a separate story) suggests that the brand has set a modest goal of just 12 million units for the Note 9. So the report indicates that the decision to unify Samsung’s flagship series might also depend upon the response to the Note 9. 

Merging the two series under one moniker could help Samsung to market its offering(s) better. Furthermore, it will save time and money for the company on the development, designing and manufacturing of the product. Meanwhile, it’s widely rumoured that from the next year, Samsung will launch three variants of the Galaxy S10, instead of just two. The top variant in the trio could very well come with a stylus of its own, just like the phones in the Note series. However, all of this is conjecture on the basis of a report as of now, so we’d advise you to take it with a pinch of a salt.
