Lenovo to launch world’s first 5G smartphone with Snapdragon 855, says VP

“Several manufacturers are planning to launch their first 5G smartphones in the first half of 2019”

Lenovo’s group vice president Chang Cheng is known for building hype around the brand’s upcoming smartphones. Soon after the company launched its latest offering, the Lenovo 5Z, Cheng has now claimed that Lenovo will be the world’s first manufacturer to launch a 5G-enabled smartphone.

Lenovo 5G smartphone claim

Cheng took to Chinese social networking website Weibo to claim that Lenovo’s first 5G smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 855 processor. Unfortunately, he didn’t mention other specifications or the launch date of the handset. However, we won’t see this smartphone before December, when Qualcomm will be unveiling the Snapdragon 855 processor.

Apart from Lenovo, other manufacturers like OPPO, Vivo, Huawei, OnePlus, and Samsung are also working on their first 5G smartphones. Earlier in April, Huawei announced that it will be introducing its 5G handset in Q3 2019. OnePlus already confirmed that its 2019 flagship will be 5G ready. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 series smartphones are also expected to offer 5G connectivity. Vivo is planning to release a 5G smartphone equipped with Qualcomm’s X50 5G NR modem.

Lenovo Z5 - Featured

It’s worth mentioning that Cheng has a reputation for exaggerating claims regarding the brand’s phones. Before the launch of the Lenovo Z5, he teased the phone to the audience as a flagship smartphone, even though the handset arrived as a budget offering. So it’s advisable to take Cheng’s latest claim with a grain of salt till there’s some concrete information.
