Top five features of the MEIZU 16 and MEIZU 16 Plus
“At just 7.3mm, MEIZU’s latest are the thinnest smartphones with an under-display fingerprint scanner”
Earlier this year, MEIZU launched its 15th-year-anniversary smartphones — the MEIZU 15 and MEIZU 15 Plus on its home soil. Less than four months in and MEIZU has introduced their successors in the form of the MEIZU 16 and 16 Plus today. One look at their spec sheet, and it’s evident that the new MEIZU 16 duo is an upgrade over their predecessors in every aspect. If you are wondering why we think so, then here’s the list of top features of the MEIZU 16 and MEIZU 16 Plus which make them stand out.
91.18 percent screen-to-body ratio without a notch or a pop-up camera

If there’s one smartphone trend that has spread like a wildfire in 2018, it has to be the display notch. Thankfully, brands like OPPO and Vivo showed us that the cut-out isn’t the only way to achieve an impressive screen-to-body ratio with the use of motorised components. However, MEIZU has been able to get rid of it and yet offers an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 91.18 percent, which is only marginally less than 91.24 percent. According to the brand, it has invested heavily in developing a screen packaging technology with all necessary components on the front comfortably crammed in a minuscule forehead.
The end result is a refined design with extremely thin bezels all around. Further, the brand claims that the glass body of these smartphones has been crafted using a seven-layer coating process, giving it a ceramic-like texture. MEIZU is offering the latest duo in white and black hues with former flaunting a satin-like finish and latter having a glossy one.
The thinnest smartphone with an under-display fingerprint scanner

MEIZU’s penchant for design refinement is further reflected in its claim that the MEIZU 16 siblings are the thinnest smartphones in the world to come with an under-display fingerprint scanner. Both smartphones feature a waistline of 7.3mm, which is at par with some of the thinnest smartphones in the world. To put things into the perspective, the Vivo NEX, which also comes with an under-display fingerprint scanner measures 8mm. The OPPO Find X, which got rid of the fingerprint scanner altogether in favour of the 3D face unlock module is 9.3mm thick. Not just thickness, the brand has also managed to keep the weight of the handset in check despite featuring an all-glass build, as it tips the scale at just 152 gms.
Speaking of the fingerprint scanner, MEIZU has optimised the tech’s implementation and the sensors on both smartphones have recognition speed of 0.25 seconds and a success rate of 99.12 percent.
Liquid cooled copper tube cooling system to optimise thermals

With the new launch, MEIZU has opted for a flagship chipset from Qualcomm for the first time – Snapdragon 845. The smartphone gets 6GB RAM for the base variant and 8GB RAM for the higher-end models. To ensure that the handsets perform at their best even during rigorous tasks like playing PUBG, the company has installed new liquid cooled copper tube cooling system under the hood of the MEIZU 16 and 16 Plus. This’ll ensure that the thermal throttle on these smartphone is in check most of the time and doesn’t bog down the resources.
Powerful cameras with AI algorithms

Coming to the imaging department, MEIZU has retained the same camera setup as the MEIZU 15 on its latest smartphones. The MEIZU 16 and 16 Plus features a 12MP IMX 380 sensor paired with a secondary 20MP IMX350 snapper on the rear panel. The shooters also get AI-enabled features like auto HDR mode and scene recognition for enhanced photography. The primary camera at the back further gets four axis OIS for improved stability while clicking pictures and recording videos. As for selfies, the handsets come with a 20MP camera on the front with ArcSoft’s beauty algorithms for enhanced output. The front camera is also capable of capturing selfies in the Bokeh mode.
Lossless audio with Qualcomm aptX support and Sony LDAC

MEIZU has also ensured these handsets deliver when it comes to multimedia. The MEIZU 16 and 16 Plus ship with 6-inch and 6.5-inch Super AMOLED displays, respectively, to provide an immersive viewing experience. Furthermore, the phone come with support for Qualcomm aptX and Sony LDAC. These audio features are designed to offer high-resolution lossless audio over wireless headphones.
Sadly, MEIZU has not yet announced whether the smartphones will be launched outside of China as of now. In its home market, the pricing of the MEIZU 16 starts at RMB 2,698 (~Rs 27,000) for the base model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage and going all the way up to RMB 3,298 (~Rs 33,000) for 8GB + 128GB unit. The MEIZU 16 Plus on the other hand, will retail at a starting price of RMB 3,198 (~Rs 32,000) for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage version, with the top-most model carrying a price tag of RMB 3,998 (~Rs 40,000) for the top-most configuration.
