Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro spotted on Thailand’s NBTC; speculated to be the global variant of Mi 8 Explorer Edition

“The Mi 8 Pro is likely to retain all the features of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, including a translucent back panel”

Xiaomi announced its latest flagship, the Mi 8 (first impressions) and its toned-down variant Mi 8 SE (in pictures), at the 2018 Annual Product Launch event hosted earlier this year. At the same event, the brand also took covers off a premium offering of its flagship called the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The smartphone flaunts interesting features such as an under-display fingerprint scanner and a transparent rear panel. Now, the same handset is expected to make its global debut as the Mi 8 Pro and has recently been spotted by 91mobiles on the website of The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission of Thailand.

The latest listing only reveals the model number of the handset – M1807E8A with the Mi 8 Pro next to it. Notably, the same handset has been spotted on other certifications websites in the past including Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and TENAA. However, the certification on the NBTC website doesn’t reveal much information about the smartphone. However, we can expect the global variant of the flagship to come with the same spec sheet as the Explorer Edition in China.

To recap on the spec sheet of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, the handset comes with a 6.21-inch display with a notch up top, an 18.7:9 aspect ratio and full HD+ resolution. In the performance department, the Snapdragon 845 processor is ticking at its core, which is paired with 8GB of RAM. The native storage on the smartphone is 128GB. As for cameras, the phone comes with a pair of 12MP shooters on the back and 20MP selfie camera. The smartphone boots MIUI 10 based on the Android Oreo out of the box. For security, there is an under-display fingerprint scanner and face unlock module.

The Mi 8 Explorer Edition retails for RMB 3,699, which is roughly Rs 39,000 in China. If it indeed turns out to be the global variant in the form of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro, it’d be interesting to see at what price the phone will be launched at.
