Xiaomi Redmi 6 vs Realme 2: a hard-fought battle in budget segment

“The Xiaomi Redmi 6 brings dual-camera module to the budget Redmi series from the brand”

Budget smartphones have been getting better with each passing year but 2018 has taken the competition to a whole new level. After launching the highly-compelling Realme 1 (review) in India just a few months back, the brand recently introduced the Realme 2 (review) with a much bigger battery capacity, dual rear cameras, and a fingerprint sensor into the market. Now, Xiaomi has launched its Redmi 6 (first impressions) smartphone in the same price range to heat up the competition in the affordable smartphones category. To help you understand how the new Xiaomi offering stacks up against the Realme 2, here is our detailed comparison.

Design and display

The newly launched Xiaomi Redmi 6 comes with a similar look to most other Xiaomi phones. The phone’s body is primarily made out of plastic and the fingerprint sensor is located in the middle of the back panel. There is a rear-facing dual camera setup on the top-left, assisted by an LED flash, and the loudspeaker is present at the bottom half. At the front, you are treated with a 5.45-inch HD+ (1,440 x 720 pixels) display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. Unfortunately, despite a taller display size, the bezels are still relatively on the thicker side.

If we talk about the Realme 2, the handset ships with a glass sandwich design with a diamond cut pattern at the back, which provides a premium look to the phone. Just like the Redmi 6, there is a dual camera setup on the top-left at the rear and a fingerprint sensor in the middle. At the front, you get a 6.2-inch HD+ (1,520 x 720 pixels) display with a notch design, which results in an impressive screen-to-body ratio.

If you are going purely by aesthetics, the Realme 2 offers comparatively modern design elements than the Xiaomi Redmi 6 and would likely be the preferred choice.

Performance and software

Speaking of the performance, the Redmi 6 gets the mid-range MediaTek Helio P22 chipset ticking at its core. Xiaomi is offering the latest launch in two configurations – 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM, and 3GB RAM + 64GB ROM. In comparison, the Realme 2 comes powered by a more budget-oriented Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor. The handset is being offered in 3GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB variants. Both these smartphones come with support for expandable storage.

Both processors are almost at par, however, Helio P22 comes with a better performance and battery efficiency balance. This is because the MediaTek chipset features 12nm die size as compared to 14nm fabrication on the Snapdragon 450 SoC. Nevertheless, we can expect both Redmi 6 and Realme 2 to perform equally efficiently in day to day usage.

As for the software, the Xiaomi Redmi 6 boots Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI interface out of the box. On the other hand, the Realme 2 comes with OPPO’s ColorOS based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Camera and battery

Coming to the imaging department, both these smartphones are equipped with dual camera setups at the rear. The Realme 2 comes with a 13-megapixel primary shooter backed by a 2-megapixel secondary camera and LED flash. As for the Redmi 6, the smartphone flaunts a 12-megapixel camera accompanied by a 5-megapixel secondary shooter and LED flash. Since the secondary camera on both smartphones is a depth sensor for bokeh imaging, the primary shooter is the star of the show. As such, the Realme 2 is better by a very slight margin. Moving on to the selfie camera, Realme 2 again gets an upper hand with its 8-megapixel shooter. The Redmi 6, on the other hand, comes with a 5-megapixel unit.

Lastly, Realme 2 comes with a massive 4,320mAh battery, which is significantly larger than the 3,000mAh cell fuelling the Redmi 6.

Closing thoughts

Redmi 6 vs Realme 2

Right off the bat, you can tell that the Realme 2 is a much better smartphone as compared to the Redmi 6, at least on paper. Whether it’s the head-turning design, cameras or performance, the Realme offering has a slight upper hand over the Redmi 6. However, Xiaomi enjoys a much wider brand-recognition in India and with an identical price tag, the latest launch is expected to be the device of choice for most consumers. Which of these two are you likely to pick up? Let us know in the comments.
