Honor 8X vs Realme 2 Pro: solidifying the mid-range competition

Honor has launched the much-awaited 8X (first impressions) in India. The latest from Honor arrives with an impressive set of features and is priced attractively at Rs 14,999 for its base model. A quick look at the price and features of the handset suggest that it’ll be competing against a new kid on the block in the form of the Realme 2 Pro (review). They both are solid mid-rangers and comes with loaded spec sheets, but which is a better buy? Let’s find out in a detailed comparison between the Honor 8X and Realme 2 Pro.

Design and display 

The Realme 2 Pro is the most affordable phone to come with a Dewdrop notch. This ensures that the bezels on the device are minimal as the handset is able to offer an impressive screen to body ratio of 90.8 percent. The Realme 2 Pro’s rear surface is made out of plastic, which looks shiny, but doesn’t offer a solid in-hand feel. In comparison, while the Honor 8X sports the conventional notch, the smartphone flaunts an eye-catching design. The dual-tone glass-back design also adds to the charm. 

Moving on, the Realme 2 Pro features a 6.3-inch FHD+ display while the Honor 8X features a slightly larger 6.5-inch display with a 1080p resolution. Both the devices offer a tall aspect ratio of 19:5:9. 

Hardware and software

Powering the Realme 2 Pro is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 SoC paired with 4GB / 6GB RAM and 64GB / 128GB of internal storage. Meanwhile, the Honor 8X draws the power from the Kirin 710 octa-core processor working alongside 4GB / 6GB of RAM and available in 64GB / 128GB memory options.  

On the software front, the Realme handset runs OPPO’s ColorOS 5.2 and offers features like AI-based camera, face unlock and split-screen multitasking. The 8X boots Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.1, which also comes with some interesting features.

Camera and battery

The Realme 2 Pro comes equipped with a dual rear camera setup that includes a 16-megapixel shooter and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front snapper is a 16MP unit. The Honor 8X on the other hand, sports a pair of shooters, consisting of a 20MP camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Also present on the 8X is a host of AI-backed camera features like the Scene Recognition, Super Night Shooting, Sports Shot, Super Slow Motion and Night Selfie.

The Realme 2 Pro is backed by a 3,500mAh battery as opposed to the much larger 3,750mAh unit on the Honor 8X. However, both the devices support fast charging.

Closing thoughts

Both the Realme 2 Pro and the Honor 8X come pretty close when it comes to specifications and features. If display size is of paramount, then the 8X makes the cut. The dual rear camera unit on Honor’s offering also seems to be better (at least on paper) as opposed to the one on the Realme 2 Pro. However, if you want a device with larger RAM capacity, the Realme 2 Pro is a better choice. The Realme offering is also priced more affordably as its price starts at Rs 13,990, while the base model of the Honor 8X costs Rs 14,999. The top-of-the-line 8GB / 128GB variant of the Realme 2 Pro retails at Rs 17,990 while the Honor 8X 6GB / 128GB model will set you back by Rs 18,990. 

All said and done, you can’t go wrong with either of the two, so it depends on what exactly you’re looking for.
