Apple is reportedly planning to restart iPhone X production

“Apple had officially discontinued the iPhone X in most major markets, though it continues to sell in countries such as India”

It’s not news that the unit sales of the new iPhone lineup haven’t been up to the mark, but a new report suggests that Apple is actually considering reviving the iPhone X from the dead to keep the numbers chugging. Although the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR launched with much fanfare and rave reviews, the devices have really struggled to create demand in the market thanks to their high price tags. And with such reports coming in with just two months into the cycle, it doesn’t augur well for the Cupertino-based company.

A report by The Wall Street Journal states that some of Apple’s suppliers have resumed the production of iPhone X, months after the Cupertino company officially stopped selling the device in its own stores. Further, the report claims Apple is in need of a specific amount of OLED panels from Samsung in order to restart iPhone X production.

The struggle doesn’t end here, Apple is also said to be mulling the idea of slashing the prices of iPhone XR in Japan by offering subsides to telcos. It’ll be interesting to see if similar discounts make their way to other countries including and especially India, where iPhone prices run in lakhs of rupees.

This news comes after Apple reportedly slashed procurement orders for iPhone components from its list of suppliers including Foxconn and others. Apple’s initial plan to produce nearly 70 million units of iPhone XR fell apart and company reportedly cut its procurement orders by nearly a third. One of the major reasons for this downhill tread could be the prices, apart from the slower upgrade cycle in the smartphone industry in general. After all despite being great smartphones, iPhones are not exactly what you call “pocket friendly.”
