Apple Music coming to Amazon Echo speakers from December 17th

“Amazon is adding Apple Music’s playback support as an Alexa skill”

Apple’s popular music streaming app is coming to Amazon’s Echo line of Alexa-powered wireless speakers. This is the first wireless speaker that Apple Music will be coming to — apart from Apple’s own HomePod — and signifies the rise of services as a revenue stream for the Cupertino technology giant. Until very recently, Apple’s primary revenue stream was always driven by robust hardware sales and growth (in particular, iPhones). 

Amazon notes this on its official blog, stating that the Apple Music rollout will occur gradually across the USA, beginning from the week of December 17th. In the post, Dave Limp, senior vice president of Amazon Devices has stated that “music is one of the most popular features on Alexa—since we launched Alexa four years ago, customers are listening to more music in their homes than ever before. We are committed to offering great music providers to our customers and since launching the Music Skill API to developers just last month, we’ve expanded the music selection on Alexa to include even more top-tier services. We’re thrilled to bring Apple Music – one of the most popular music services in the US – to Echo customers this holiday.“

Amazon is adding Apple Music’s playback support as an Alexa skill, enabled when Amazon added the Music Skill API to Alexa earlier this year. To get Apple Music support on an Echo speaker, all that a user needs to do is to add the Apple Music skill in the Alexa app, and then sign in to the service using the registered details. This gives Amazon’s Echo lineup of speakers the ability to stream music from a service apart from Amazon’s own Prime Music. Apple has a robust collection of artists, curated playlists, radio station broadcasts and albums, all of which will now be available on Echo devices. 

It is however, unclear if every Alexa-equipped wireless speaker will also get support for Apple Music playback. It also remains to be seen if Apple Music support will be rolled out globally.
