Huawei plans to launch flagships with quad-camera module and 10x optical zoom

Chinese handset maker Huawei has recently emerged as one of the brands to reckon with, thanks to powerful flagships like Mate 20 series and the P20 series. The handset maker has been banking on the imaging prowess of these smartphones as well as the loaded spec sheet to take on Samsung and Apple. Now, Huawei has hinted at plans to launch flagships with four cameras and 10x zoom in near future.

President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, Western European Region – Walter Ji hinted at the ambitious plans of the company. In an interview, the top executive said the brand is gearing up to launch its first quad-camera flaunting flagship at some point in next year. We have already seen a four camera setup on Samsung’s Galaxy A9 (2018) (first impressions), however, Huawei claims that it intends to do things differently. The Samsung offering comes with 24MP + 10MP + 8MP + 5MP setup in RGB, ultra-wide camera, a telephoto lens, and a depth sensor. However, Huawei intends to utilise one sensor solely for optical zoom.

Ji elaborated that one camera sensor on the upcoming Huawei flagship will be used to offer 10x optical zoom. This is a breakthrough since even Huawei P20 Pro (review) – the DxOMark chart topping camera smartphone at this point – offers up to 3x optical zoom. Huawei executive emphasised that “Ten times the zoom in consistent quality” is what will make the next flagship stand out from the crowd. However, apart from this bit, no other information was divulged by the brand. Notably, the brand has also confirmed recently that a foldable smartphone with support for 5G network is also in works.

As of now, there is no word on the exact timeline for the launch of these smartphones. Walter Ji stated that the brand is still researching and might launch anytime in 2019. We will bring you more updates as and when they emerge, so stay tuned.
