Nokia 7.1 vs Nokia 6.1 Plus: what’s changed

“The new Nokia 7.1 isn’t much different from the 6.1 Plus”

At an event held in London last month, HMD Global unveiled the much-awaited Nokia 7.1 (first impressions) and the brand has now launched it in India today. While the smartphone comes with some interesting features, it also seems to be shipping with a similar spec sheet as the Nokia 6.1 Plus (review). So if you are also wondering what sets these two phones apart and which one should you pick up, you’re at the right place. We pit the Nokia 7.1 and the 6.1 Plus against each other to see which one’s a better choice.

First and foremost, while the display sizes and panels are the same on both smartphones — 5.84-inch full HD+ panel with a notch up top — the Nokia 7.1 comes with a very crucial upgrade. The latest launch is the first from the brand to come with HDR display. This means that the Nokia 7.1 users will be able to enjoy watching videos with improved contrast and dynamic range along with vivid colours. What’s interesting however, is the fact that along with offering this capability on compatible videos on services like YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, the handset can also convert normal videos to HDR in real time.

Moving on to the imaging department, the Nokia 6.1 Plus comes with a 16-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual-camera setup on the back. In comparison, the Nokia 7.1 features a 12MP primary camera, though the resolution of the secondary shooter remains the same. However, both phones offer similar camera features, including the Live Bokeh mode. The Nokia 7.1 also loses out in the selfie department as it comes with an 8-megapixel shooter, as opposed to the 16-megapixel front-facing snapper on the 6.1 Plus.

Lastly, the Nokia 7.1 is available in 3GB RAM + 32GB storage as well as 4GB RAM + 64GB storage options. On the other hand, the 6.1 Plus only comes in the 4GB variant, which ships with 64GB memory.

Both the Nokia 6.1 Plus and 7.1 come powered by the Snapdragon 636 chipset backed by Adreno 509 GPU. Under the hood, the handsets sip juice from 3,060mAh batteries. The smartphones also share the same design with a vertically-stacked dual-camera module, a fingerprint scanner on the back, and a glass-sandwich design.

As is customary with Nokia handsets, both smartphones are part of Google’s Android One initiative. The phones boot stock Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and are entitled to two major upgrades as well as security patches from Google for the next three years. Further, they share the usual connectivity options.
