Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro vs Realme 2 Pro: when the fight goes pro

“Both the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and Realme 2 Pro are loaded mid-rangers”

When it comes to cameras, cramming as many as possible into the phone is a recent trend. With the Redmi Note 6 Pro (review), Xiaomi has sort of jumped into this fad as well as the smartphone comes with four cameras, two at the front and two at the back. In terms of other features, the company seems to have followed the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” proverb, as the handset’s internals remain largely unchanged from its predecessor, the Redmi Note 5 Pro (review). But the new device will still give tough competition to the recently launched Realme 2 Pro (review) that impressed us with its powerful spec sheet. Considering both smartphones start at Rs 14k, let’s compare them to see which one’s a better buy.

Design and display

The big design change on the Redmi Note 6 Pro is of course its large notch. Compared to this, the Realme 2 Pro’s subtle ‘Dewdrop’ notch makes it look way more attractive. Both the devices have minimal bezels, but slightly large chins. The Xiaomi handset has adopted a metal body, while the other phone has gone for a plastic shell that has been granted a glossy effect to make it look like glass. Both the phones place their fingerprint scanners on their backs, and carry age-old micro-USB ports. They retain their headphone sockets, and offer single bottom-firing speakers.

The Redmi Note 6 Pro has gone for a 6.26-inch LCD panel, which bears a resolution of 1,080 x 2,280 pixels. On the other hand, the Realme 2 Pro has gone for a 6.3-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,340 pixels. With their displays being of nearly the same size, the main differentiator is, of course, the size of their notches.

Hardware and software

As we said earlier, Xiaomi has not changed the phone’s internals much. Which is why you still get the Snapdragon 636 chipset with a 1.8GHz octa-core CPU and an Adreno 509 GPU. The Realme 2 Pro has more power at its heart, in the form of the Snapdragon 660 SoC, which comes with a 2GHz octa-core processor and Adreno 512 graphics. The Note 6 Pro is being offered in a 64GB storage model that can be bought with 4GB or 6GB of RAM. The Realme 2 Pro ships with 64GB of storage with its 4GB and 6GB RAM variants, and also has an 8GB RAM version that offers 128GB of memory onboard. Both the phones let you expand the storage further with the use of a microSD card.

MIUI is, of course, the software of choice for the Redmi Note 6 Pro. This Android Oreo-based ROM brings with it several upgrades like nature sound ringtones, UI improvements, a picture-in-picture mode, gesture support and more. In contrast, the Realme 2 Pro runs OPPO’s ColorOS OS 5.2, and apart from the usual traits that this UI is known for, it also offers features like face unlock, split-screen multitasking and a ton of AI-based camera features.

Camera and battery life

The dual cameras on the front of the Redmi Note 6 Pro are meant for clicking portrait selfies, and hence come with six distinct bokeh effects. These cameras are 20MP and 2MP in resolution. The front camera on the Realme 2 Pro is a 16MP unit that’s aided by various AI features. Coming to their rear cameras, the Xiaomi phone retains the 12MP + 5MP setup of the Note 5 Pro thought the primary snapper has a wider aperture and larger pixel size, while the Realme device offers a pair of 16MP and 2MP shooters. Both these phones come with AI-based scene recognition.

When it comes to battery life, the Redmi Note 6 Pro gets an edge with its 4,000mAh unit which can deliver up to two-day battery life with moderate usage. In comparison, the Realme 2 Pro grabs a 3,500mAh cell, which too is pretty admirable.

Closing thoughts

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro vs Realme 2 Pro- Featured

The Redmi Note 6 Pro starts at Rs 13,999, while the Realme 2 Pro’s base model comes at Rs 13,990. These phones are pretty neck-to-neck. Those who go for the Xiaomi phone will get better cameras and a great battery life, though the processor won’t be the best in its category and the large notch is hard to miss. While the Realme 2 Pro gets a faster processor and a tiny notch, its battery and cameras are relatively weaker. Thus, it all boils down to what are you looking for in the smartphone, but one thing is certain that you can’t go wrong with either of them.
