Apple reportedly working on bringing new flexible OLED display technology for thinner iPhones

“Along with working on the touch-integrated OLED panels, Apple is also reportedly working on creating custom modem chipsets”

Apple has already started drawing out plans for its 2019 iPhones and if latest reports are to go by, the company will be presenting us with an exciting range of iPhone lineup next year. As per a latest report, the Cupertino giant is working on integrating a technology into at least one of its 2019 iPhones which will make the device thinner and lighter. Apple is planning to do this by using touch-integrated flexible OLED panels; current screens on iPhones consist of a separate touch layer which is placed on top of the display. The new screen technology will allow Apple iPhones to become thinner and lighter.

The screen technology to be used by Apple, named Y-Octa, will be created by Samsung. According to a report by ETNews“Samsung Display will supply touch-integrated flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels to Apple’s iPhone. It is a Samsung OLED called ‘Y-OCTA’. It’s the first time Apple has applied touch-integrated displays to the iPhone […]

According to industry sources today, Apple decided to apply touch-integrated flexible OLED panels to the new iPhone and commissioned the development and manufacturing from Samsung Display. Samsung Display recently entered into partnerships with related companies to develop parts and materials to make the displays.”

The technology will most likely be used in 2019 iPhone, however, it might only be exclusive to the highest-end variant for the time being. The screen might be integrated in all phones launching after that, as the technology is cheaper than the separate layer screens. Samsung reportedly started talks with Apple to bring in this technology early this year. The South Korean giant has been Apple’s OLED display provider for iPhone X and this year’s iPhone XS, XS Max.

In other news, The Information has reported that Apple is planning to build its own custom cellular modem. According to a job listing by the Cupertino giant, it is evident that the company is trying to get people on board for its cellular modem project. As per the report, “Apple has provided the clearest evidence yet that it is working on one of the most complicated and expensive hardware ingredients in its devices: a cellular modem. In a job listing posted a week ago, which hasn’t previously been reported, the company said it is looking for a cellular modem systems architect to work in its San Diego office.”

Th report also states that the modem will take around three years to debut in an iPhone or other Apple devices. Apple making its own modems will result in easier integration with its other devices like the MacBook. This new development comes amidst Apple’ legal battle with Qualcomm, which used to be its modem chip supplier before their fallout. It was also reported that Apple was trying to poach employees from Qualcomm for its new project.
