Micromax to launch its first smartphone with notch on December 18th

Micromax has sent out media invites for an event it will be hosting in India on December 18th. The teaser image in the invites suggests the Indian brand will be launching its first smartphone with a notch on top at the event next week. This will be the first major launch in a while for Micromax, which has been overtaken by Chinese players in the country.

In a teaser image shared on social media channels by Micromax, the silhouette of a smartphone with a wide notch. The width is reminiscent of the iPhone X or iPhone XS and we could spot the Power and Volume buttons on the right edge of the handset. There is not much else to glean from the image shared by the brand.

The company has used the hashtag #AbovetheRest on the smartphone, suggesting it will be a flagship-class product, at leas for the brand. Since Micromax strictly plays in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment, we should expect an affordable offering, not a premium product. The tagline Does the powerful excite you?’ is also present in the teaser image, but once again, it unlikely that the company would launch a smartphone to take on the likes of OnePlus 6T and Samsung Galaxy S9.

Micromax used to be the second-biggest player in the Indian smartphone market at one point, but was overrun by the spate of Chinese brands that entered India circa 2015. While some, such as Comio, fell by the wayside, Xiaomi has emerged as the definite market leader and has even overtaken Samsung by shipments. OPPO and Vivo have also made their mark in the Indian market with their affordable handsets, while OnePlus dominates the premium segment.
