Apple Watch first-gen will be replaced with Series 2 models due to parts shortage: report

If you still in possession of the original Apple Watch and are about to get it repaired, you might be in a bit of a luck. Authorised Apple service centres will no longer repair the original and first-gen Apple Watch devices received from customers. Instead, they’ll replace them with new Apple Watch Series 2 units. The information comes from an internal Apple document, a copy of which is with MacRumours, which has been distributed to all Apple Authorised Service Providers in the US and other countries.

According to the report, replacement of the 42mm original and first-gen Apple Watch models with Series 2 models will start in February and run through April. However, if supply constraints continue, Apple could allow service providers to extend the deadline. And although there’s no mention of of the smaller 38mm models in the company documents, the reason for this decision is clearly mentioned (which you may have guessed by now)  — shortage of parts. So, in a few days time you’ll be eligible for an upgrade of sorts if you need a repair on your old Apple Watch.

That’s all about the older models of Apple Watch. Taking about future models, there’s a possibility that these models could come with the ability to detect poisonous gases. With ECG capabilities already available on the current model, the Cupertino, California-based giant looks very focussed on providing its customers more features to safeguard their health and safety. A 2017 Apple patent application titled “Chemically Robust Miniature Sensors” details a a tiny sensor that can be embedded in a device and used to test for the presence of poisonous gases.
