Over 100 million Alexa-powered devices have been sold, Amazon executive claims
“Amazon is sold out of Echo Dot devices for January as well, the executive revealed”
Amazon has announced that it has sold over 100 million Alexa-powered devices till date. However, it has neither revealed how many of the devices sold are its own products nor provided any sales breakdown by category. The info was shared by Dave Limp, a Senior Vice President at Amazon, in an interview with The Verge.
Limp also mentioned that Amazon has sold out its entire inventory of Echo Dot devices for January. According to a report by CNET, the sales of the Echo Dot have exceeded expectations. It also mentions that approximately one million people signed up to receive invitations to buy Echo Auto – an Alexa-enabled device for the car.
It is strange how the voice-controlled AI enhanced speakers are actually taking over the market as smart devices. Amazon is taking over other companies by simply adding its lineup with updated Alexa skills. Recently, the company revealed that the number of customers who use Alexa every day and who own more than one Amazon Echo has doubled in 2018.
The statistics, however, does not provide a clear picture of Alexa’s reach. It does not show the figure that how many people are actually using the AI helper. There are over 28,000 Alexa-capable home devices present in the market and there is also a possibility that some of them are not of much use.
Then a question comes about the competition. It’s harder to know whether Alexa is facing a challenge or stands dominant unless Google reveals its own data. Since many Android phones are available with Assistant but are not built like smart speakers and other smart home devices, it is harder to evaluate a competitor like Google Assistant.
