Jio reportedly working on a ‘super app’ that will provide 100 services via a single platform
“Jio’s rumoured super app is expected to be similar to WeChat and facilitate e-commerce, online bookings, and payments – all in one place”
Ahead of Reliance Industries’ big e-commerce gamble, Jio seems to be working on a WeChat like ‘Super App.’ The app will reportedly bring over 100 services, ranging from online bookings to e-stores and payments, all under one umbrella. Such an app would essential become what WeChat is to China and will be a must-have app that would help RIL win a market that brands such as Snapdeal, Paytm, Freecharge, and Hike have failed to crack, according to experts. This app would likely be part of RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani’s new-commerce initiative, which is an online to offline effort.
“The ubiquitousness of Jio devices puts Reliance in a powerful position. It can connect its vast ecosystem of its users with a multi-layered fabric, offering a rich array of services, connecting online-to-offline, through a one-stop, super app,” Prabhu Ram, Head, Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, told IANS.
Jio, which kickstarted its commercial operations in 2016, now has over 300 million subscribers – a user base of this magnitude will give the company’s ‘super app’ an opportunity to cater to a large audience of with its assortment of offerings. “India is a mobile-first nation and such a self-contained network that offers convenience will find favour with demanding consumers,” Ram added further. The telecom operator’s recent investments in the field of AI, vernacular voice tech, and logistics are said to put RIL in a pole position to create India’s answer to WeChat.
As for the RIL’s e-commerce business, we’ll have to wait until next year for the project to start. However, Mukesh Ambani at Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit earlier this year announced that it’ll launch its online-to-offline business as a pilot programme in Gujarat, which will enrich over 12 lakh small retailers and shopkeepers.
