Highlights
  • 12th gen Intel Core Alder Lake processors have been announced.
  • The lineup is led by the flagship Core i9-12900K CPU that is claimed to be the ‘world’s best gaming processor.
  • Intel is promising an average performance improvement of up to 19 percent with 12th generation processors over the 11th gen.

Intel has finally taken wraps off the 12th generation Alder Lake chipsets at the Intel Innovation Event. The lineup is led by the flagship Core i9-12900K CPU that is claimed to be the ‘world’s best gaming processor. It offers a max turbo boost of up to 5.2GHz, 16 cores and 24 threads. The noted chip maker had teased the Alder Lake chipsets at the CES 2021 in January and revealed quite a few details at its 2021 Architecture Day in July. Intel seems to be taking gaming quite seriously this time around as it’s making a giant leap forward in comparison to previous generations. With the 12th generation processors, Intel is claiming an average performance improvement of up to 19 percent over the 11th gen, with better gaming and multi-threaded performance.

12th Gen Intel processors’ availability

The latest 12th Gen Intel Core processors are available to pre-order from select partners and retailers. They will be available starting from November 4th at a starting price of $264 (around Rs 20,000) and goes all the way up to $589 (approx Rs 44,000).

MODEL CORES CLOCK SPEED PRICE
Core i9-12900K 8 P, 8 E cores up to 5.2GHz $589
Core i9-12900KF 8 P Core, 8 E Core Up to 5.2GHz $564
Core i7-12700K 8 P Core, 4 E Core Up to 5.0GHz $409
Core i7-12700KF 8 P Core, 4 E Core Up to 5.0GHz $384
Core i5-12600K 6 P Core, 4 E Core Up to 4.9 GHz $289
Core i5-12600KF 6 P Core, 4 E Core Up to 4.9GHz $264

12th-generation Intel Core CPU specs

The Intel processors unveiled are the first processors based on Intel’s performance hybrid architecture featuring a combination of Performance-cores (P-cores) and Efficient-cores (E-cores). The Intel Core i9-12900K model offers a total of 16 cores, split between eight performance forced performance cores and eight efficient ‘efficient cores and 24 threads. It is capable of reaching clock speeds of up to 5.2GHz using Intel’s Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology. There’s also the Core i7-12700K that comes with 12 total cores and 20 threads, with eight performance cores and four e-cores. The Core i5-12700K features 10 total cores and 16 threads, with six performance cores and four efficient cores. Interestingly, each of the three new chips is also available in a KF variant that eliminates the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 to keep the price in check.

All three new chipsets offer up to 20 PCIe lanes (split between 16 PCIe 5.0 and 4 PCIe 4.0 lanes), support for DDR5 memory at up to 4800MT/s (along with older DDR4 support at 3200MT/s), and larger L3 and L2 cache sizes. Intel says the Core i9-12900K offers up to 25 percent more FPS on Troy: A Total War Saga, up to 28 percent more FPS on Hitman 3, and up to 23 percent more FPS on Far Cry 6. The 12th general Core processors are said to offer up to 36 percent fast photo editing performance, up to 32 percent faster video editing performance, up to 100 percent faster multi-frame rendering, and up to 27 percent faster 3D modelling performance.

The chipmaker has announced the new processors offer overclocking efficient cores and DDR5 memory and interested customers can also try the new platform overclocking as a part of the latest Intel Extreme Tuning Utility 7.5. The company has also introduced the latest Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) 3.0 with support for DDR5. Alder Lake chips need a motherboard built on Intel’s newly announced Z690 chipset, which adds features like Wi-Fi 6E and faster USB 3.2 Gen 2X2 data transfer. Intel says that it worked with Microsoft to optimise the Intel Thread Director software to better manage tasks across threads when using Windows 11.

Intel apparently has big plans for the hybrid Alder Lake architecture, which includes mobile chips and ultra-mobile chips for laptops and other portable devices.
