Nokia 2.1 vs Nokia 2: what’s new
“The Nokia 2.1 promises to bring over 50 percent performance boost compared to the Nokia 2”
HMD Global’s revival of the Nokia brand has been a huge success in many parts of the world. While India still remains a market where Xiaomi phones are dominating the low-end segment, Nokia’s offerings are becoming good propositions for potential buyers. And with the launch of the new Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 in the affordable segments, the brand seems poised to stir up the market. But before that, let’s see how the most affordable offering in its latest lineup compares with its previous iteration, the Nokia 2 (first impressions).
Nokia 2 vs Nokia 2.1: what’s different
The main selling point of the Nokia 2 was its large 4,100mAh battery, but its successor has got somewhat of a downgrade in this department, with slightly smaller 4,000mAh unit. However, the promise of two-day battery life is still there. Besides, the backup will also be affected positively by the inclusion of the Snapdragon 425 processor, which offers more efficiency (and power) than the Snapdragon 220 SoC that was present on the last year’s model.
A larger display has made its way onto the Nokia 2.1. While the previous device held onto a regular 5-inch 720p panel, this one has adopted a 5.5-inch display with the same resolution. Another big change is that the Nokia 2.1 is an Android Go edition phone now, just like the Nokia 1. This means light versions of Google apps will come pre-installed on it, allowing smoother operations on its extremely modest hardware. Buyers will get the 8.1 Oreo out of the box, and the device is eligible for the Android P update as well.
The 2.1 flaunts dual front-facing stereo speakers, which is quite a novel feature in this price segment, and is a welcome move. And it’s also a big improvement over the single speaker that its predecessor had at its back panel. If you’ve seen the Nokia 6, you’ll notice that the Nokia 2.1 has similar metallic accents, lending it a premium feel. The colour combinations include blue-copper, blue-silver, and grey-silver. Strangely enough, the compass sensor which was present on the earlier device seems to be missing on the new one.
Nokia 2 vs Nokia 2.1: what’s the same
Nokia has kept the camera setup of Nokia 2.1 same as that of the 2. You will get an 8MP rear shooter and a 5MP selfie snapper. However, we’ll have to wait and see whether any improvements have been introduced to them.
The RAM also stays unchanged at 1GB. This is somewhat of a concern, but the fact that the phone runs Go edition of Android should help in ensuring smooth usage. Another area where this software is helpful is storage, since the 8GB of built-in memory on the Nokia 2.1 will be helped by the inclusion of light apps. This storage is accompanied by a microSD slot that supports up to 128GB of expansion. And like the Nokia 2, the slot on the 2.1 is a dedicated one which does not interrupt its ability to accept two SIM cards.
The list of sensors present on both the devices includes an accelerometer, an ambient light sensor, and a proximity sensor. And as far as connectivity goes, 4G LTE support has been retained by Nokia 2.1, along with support for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, and GPS. s
Price and availability
The price of the Nokia 2 in India is hovering around the Rs 6,000 mark right now, despite its MRP being Rs 6,999. The Nokia 2.1 has been priced at $115, which translates to around Rs 7,760. However, reports suggest that the phone will carry a sticker price of Rs 6,999 in India.
Closing thoughts
A bigger display, smoother software, and a faster processor are the three major upgrades that the Nokia 2.1 offers over the original model. Since the new handset will be replacing the older one and is expected to be offered at the same price, it becomes a great proposition. However, at the same time, there are several better options available in this price range, such as the Redmi 5A (review), which means that the Nokia 2.1 will be facing an uphill task in the country.
