Samsung regains number one position in India’s smartphone market : Counterpoint
“The success of Samsung during Q2 2018 is said to be attributed to the brand’s refreshed Galaxy J series”
Just a couple of days ago, the market research firm Canalys reported that Samsung closed in on Xiaomi’s dominance in India’s smartphone market in Q2 2018. The firm suggested that while Xiaomi continued to be on the first spot with a market share of 30.4 percent, Samsung came in very close with a market share of 30.2 percent. Now, another market watcher Counterpoint Research has released its report for India’s Q2 smartphone market, which contradicts the data shared by Canalys.
According to Counterpoint’s report, Samsung has regained its number one position in India’s smartphone market in the second quarter of this year. The firm claims that during this period, Samsung took the first spot with 29 percent, while Xiaomi was pushed down to the second place, claiming a market share of 28 percent. The South Korean tech giant has regained its leading position after losing it to Chinese electronics brand for two quarters straight.
Counterpoint suggests that the success of Samsung during the Q2 2018 can be attributed to its refreshed Galaxy J series smartphones. The company launched the most number of handsets under its Galaxy A and J series, which offer flagship-grade features at affordable prices, which is another fact that has been highlighted by the report. Furthermore, the firm indicates that in the second half of this year, there will be a close race between Samsung and Xiaomi, especially during the upcoming festive season.
As for the other brands, the report suggests that Vivo took the third spot with a market share of 12 percent. The brand was followed by OPPO and Honor with a market share of 10 percent and three percent respectively. OPPO’s success can be attributed to its recently launched sub-brand Realme, which managed to capture one percent share of the total smartphone market. As for the feature phones segment, Reliance Jio continued to be on the top position with 47 percent share, followed by Samsung and Nokia at nine percent and eight percent respectively.
Talking about the top five best-selling smartphones in Q2 2018, the report adds that the Xiaomi Redmi 5A took the first spot with nine percent market share. The Redmi Note 5 Pro captured the second place with six percent market share, followed by Samsung Galaxy J6 at five percent. The fourth place was claimed by Redmi Note 5 with five percent share, followed by Vivo Y71 at fifth place with four percent market grab. Lastly, the report adds that top five brands captured 82 percent of the total market share, and OnePlus, Honor, and Xiaomi were the fastest growing vendors annually.
