Smartphones with 10GB RAM or more to become common in 2019, report claims

“The addition of new components such as neural processors, AI algorithms and advanced cameras are necessitating the higher amount of RAM in phones.”

Smartphones with 10GB or more RAM are set to become increasingly common, if a DigitTimes report is to be believed. This is not an entirely outlandish claim, because we have already seen smartphones with 10GB (and even 12GB) of RAM being launched. That said, it is not a mainstream occurrence, and devices with such high amounts of memory are premium flagships that cost a fair chunk of money.

As 2019 progresses, the report states that these devices will become increasingly common. The move is being spearheaded by flagship and even mid-range Android smartphones, which are including elements such as multi-camera modules, artificial intelligence applications with voice assistants and imaging apps, neural network for advanced interfaces, and more. These tasks, which require a higher amount of processing power, are necessitating the addition of high amounts of RAM, although in terms of the average smartphone user, it is still overkill.

The standardisation of ridiculous amounts of RAM in phones has been happening for a while now. Even until just two years ago, 4GB of RAM in smartphones was considered too much and, until very recently, Apple stuck on to a measly 1GB of RAM in its flagship iPhones and still managed to make them work smoothly. However, a stagnation in terms of outright new features, coupled with longer life spans of devices, meant the higher usage of DRAMS in smartphones did not really translate into meteoric growth in the smartphone industry.

With the market stagnating now, the impact of 10GB+ RAMs in smartphones may not be too profound in terms of sales and revenues, at least in 2019. With 5G and advanced AI operations set to become mainstream in 2020, coupled with easy availability of super high resolution sensors, it is only in 2020 that phones are slated to see a renewed sense of interest from the saturated market that exists right now. By then, however, we might actually move well beyond the 12GB RAM record that a mainstream smartphone holds.
