Kerala man orders iPhone 12 from Amazon, gets Vim bar and Rs 5 coin instead
A Kerala man who had ordered an Apple iPhone 12 from Amazon was shocked to receive a bar and soap of coin instead. The customer Noorul Ameen, a resident of Aluva in Kerala, had ordered the smartphone on October 12th, paying ₹ 70,900 via Amazon Pay. He received his package on October 15th. Ameen, however, was suspicious of the package he received since it was abruptly halted in Salem for a day after being dispatched from Hyderabad. Since he is a regular Amazon customer, he knew that the packages usually arrive from Hyderabad to Kochi in two days, but instead his iPhone 12 order took 3 days. Aware of rising fraud cases, he opened the box in front of the Amazon delivery partner and shot a video of it too.
Upon opening the package, Ameen was shocked to see that the box contained a Vim bar and Rs 5 coin. He reportedly said the items felt similar in weight to an iPhone. He immediately filed a complaint in Amazon customer service as well as the police.
The Cyber Crime Police investigating the case checked the IMEI number of the phone, and found that it had already been used by someone from Jharkhand for 15 days before Ameen had placed his order. During the probe, one of the investigative officers was cited as, “We contacted the Amazon authorities and the Telangana-based seller. The phone has been in use in Jharkhand since September 25th this year, even though the order was placed only in October. When we contacted the seller, he said the phone was out of stock and that the amount paid by Noorul would be returned.”
Ameen received his refund on October 22nd and an investigation regarding how this incident occurred is still underway.
